U.S. Visa Processing Times by Country: 2025 Wait Times

Visa interview wait times at U.S. embassies and consulates vary dramatically by country, ranging from a few days in some locations to over a year in others. Here is what applicants are experiencing in 2025.

Why Wait Times Vary So Dramatically

The wait time for a U.S. visa interview at an embassy or consulate is determined by the volume of visa applications received at that post, the staffing levels of consular officers, local holidays and closures, and the overall demand for U.S. visas in that country. Posts in high-demand countries like India, Mexico, Brazil, and the Philippines consistently have among the longest wait times in the world, while posts in lower-demand countries may have appointments available within days.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a massive backlog of visa applications that many consulates are still working through. Combined with increased global travel demand and staffing challenges, wait times in 2025 remain elevated at many posts compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Countries with the Longest Wait Times (2025)

India consistently has some of the longest B-1/B-2 tourist visa wait times in the world, often exceeding 400 to 500 days at the Mumbai and New Delhi consulates during peak periods. Student visa (F-1) wait times are somewhat shorter but still frequently exceed 60 to 90 days. The U.S. has been working to increase consular capacity in India, but demand continues to outpace supply.

Mexico has seen significant increases in visa demand, with wait times at the Mexico City embassy for tourist visas reaching 200 to 300 days in 2024 and 2025. The Monterrey and Guadalajara consulates sometimes have shorter wait times and may be worth considering for applicants who can travel to those cities.

Brazil has experienced wait times of 100 to 200 days for tourist visas, particularly at the São Paulo consulate. The Rio de Janeiro and Recife consulates have sometimes offered shorter waits.

Countries with Shorter Wait Times

Many European countries, particularly in Northern and Western Europe, have relatively short visa interview wait times — often under 30 days for tourist visas. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia also tend to have shorter wait times due to lower overall application volumes, though this varies by post.

How to Check Current Wait Times

The most accurate and up-to-date source for visa interview wait times is the U.S. Department of State's official Visa Appointment Wait Times page, available at travel.state.gov. This page is updated regularly and shows both the interview appointment wait time and the visa issuance wait time (the time between your interview and when you receive your passport back) for each post.

Note that these are average wait times — your actual wait may be shorter or longer depending on when you apply and the specific visa category. Some posts also offer emergency appointment slots for applicants with urgent travel needs, such as a medical emergency or the death of a close family member.

Strategies for Reducing Your Wait Time

If your home country has extremely long wait times, you may be able to apply for a visa at a consulate in a third country where you have legal status (such as a work or student visa). This is known as "third-country national" processing. Not all posts accept third-country national applications, so check the specific post's website before making travel plans.

Another strategy is to apply as early as possible. Visa appointments can be scheduled months in advance, and applying early gives you the most flexibility. Monitor the appointment scheduling system regularly — cancellations sometimes open up earlier slots.
